Turks and Caicos Bonefish Heaven

November 25, 2009 by bonefishbjorn

A great story from the Island life blog MyTurksAndCaicosBlog.com featuring some great fishing and nice pics.

One of the bones caught and released that day.

The MyTurksAndCaicosBlog.com has some good stories on it… little bits of the island lifestyle.  It’s on my RSS feed for that bit of the tropical.

Chico Dishes on Tippet

November 24, 2009 by bonefishbjorn

Oh Midcurrent, you give and give and give.  The lastest tid-bit I found on the Midcurrent.com site was Chico Fernandez dishing out advice on tippets for Saltwater.  Nice.

The weakest knot in most anglers’ leaders is generally the leader-to-tippet connection. So here is a place in need of a real strong connection. The simple blood knot, which works fine for the rest of the leader, does not hold up when pushed to the max with the weak tippet. To tie a stronger connection for big bones, big reds, or permit, use an improved blood knot. That is, double the tippet, and then tie a normal blood knot, making six turns with the thin double line and three turns with the thicker heavier line. This makes an excellent connection that maintains 90 percent of the line’s breaking strength.

See… Wisdom.

Thanks Midcurrent and Chico.

Thanks Chico!

Bonefish Fly Lines

November 23, 2009 by bonefishbjorn

Deneki had some thoughts about Rio fly lines.  It’s worth a read.

Rio Bonefish Line

Others have been asking questions about what line is best as well.  Here’s a conversation from the Dan Blanton Board.

This Reel-Time.com forum member was a fan of the Rio line as well.

About two hours of casting from the shore by the river mouth.
5 fish to hand, 3 Jack Crevelle. Good times on the 7 wt.
Vacation = Ruling

Kalua Bonefish

November 22, 2009 by bonefishbjorn

I love Kalua Pig… I like Hawaii and I love bonefish… so, it is only natural that I’d love Coach Duff’s 11 pound Hawaiian bonefish.  Read his story here.

Hawaiian Pig = Kalua Pig

So, to wrap up…

  • Kalua Pig = Ruling
  • Hawaii = Ruling
  • Bonefish = Ruling
  • Duff’s 11 pounder = Totally Ruling

There, that should make it all perfectly clear.

Bonefish Preservation

November 21, 2009 by bonefishbjorn

Aaron Adams and BTT are everywhere, carrying the water for most of us who love, like or otherwise fish for bonefish. Found a story from the Miami Herald.  BTT went down and met with Bahamian guides to discuss increasing participation in the tagging and reporting of tagged fish.  Read the story here.

Deneki gives an update, Black Fly Reports Pig

November 20, 2009 by bonefishbjorn

Deneki Outdoors… see, they are just wired… in with the whole “internet revolution” or whatever.  I saw their latest report from Andros South pop up and wanted to send it on to all you non-Twitterati.

The other item that caught my eye from Twitter today was from Black Fly, a lodge in Abaco.  The sweet tweet reported a THIRTY INCH bonefish caught by some lucky SOB named David.

The Bonefish Adventure website has a length to weight estimation table that puts a 30 inch fish at fifteen pounds.  Nice.

It grows on trees

November 20, 2009 by bonefishbjorn

Once I get this planted, I think I’ll just retire (although I don’t technically have a job now being a stay-at-home dad).  I look forward to heading to Andros, Christmas Island, Los Roques, Belize, Acklins, New Caledonia, the Cook Islands, the Keys, and the Seychelles in one big, never-ending loop.

That should do it.

Between $2K Borski Bonefish reels, $4,000 lodge weeks, $25,000 skiffs, multiple $400-1,000 plane rides, it seems sometimes like you’d need an orchard full of money trees to taste the salty spray from your day dreams.

Luckily, daydreams don’t cost a dime.

Tag Ends 11/19/09

Most ridonculous search terms to land people on Bonefish on the Brain in the past two days…

  • how to cook bonefish (twice)
  • shooting at pirates pics
  • are there pirates in los roques

Good grief.

Drew Rush Goes Camping

November 19, 2009 by bonefishbjorn

I loved this story when I first read it… thought it needed to be brought back. This particular story appeared in This is Fly (a fly fishing e-zine which, as it happens,  is pretty damn fly) and was experienced and written by Drew Rush.

Drew is a Jackson, WY kind of guy… devastating with a camera and pretty frigging deadly with a fly rod, it appears.  He’s written several pieces for This is Fly and his work is popping up in all sorts of places.  This particular account is from a trip to Acklins with his girlfriend and some camping gear.

Here’s the story.  Enjoy.
